An Asian import, naturalised in North America since the 1880s, and a farmland bird rather than a forest one — it lives on the seam between grass nesting cover and standing grain. It would rather run than fly, and after opening week it is very good at it. Only roosters are legal in most places it is hunted, so the white neck ring, red face wattle and long barred tail are the marks that matter.
Written for this app. Not an agency description and not a regulation — everything
below this point that is a rule carries the page it was read from.
Where it is in North Carolina
barely present
An editorial summary of the bird's status in this state — not a population estimate
and not a survey.
A naturalised population on the barrier islands of Carteret, Dare and Hyde — Hatteras and Ocracoke — hunted as a wild bird, males only. On the mainland the long either-sex season is a released-bird season.
StrongholdRegularPresentOccasionalNo recordsThe 10 units in the table below1 unit too small to draw
24 of 46 subbasins draining North Carolina carry a
ring-necked pheasant record. Observed occurrences, not a range map and not a habitat model. Scored as a share of all bird records in the same cell, so a well-watched county does not read as better bird country than an unwatched one. The mesh is the subbasin — the unit this app
scores in — and not the state line, so its edge is a drainage divide rather than a
border. The green is the 10 public units in the table below,
drawn as PAD-US records their boundaries: context, not permission.

Bag limit
not shown
No single bag limit is shown for it here. Where NCWRC publishes
one that changes by zone or partway through the season, the figures are in the
notes below and this page will not pick one of them; where it publishes none at
all, this page leaves it empty rather than guess — a wrong limit is worse than a
missing one, because it looks researched. Check the
NC Inland Fishing, Hunting and Trapping Regulations Digest.
Hunter orange
required
Anyone hunting bear, feral swine, rabbit, squirrel, grouse, pheasant or quail with a firearm must wear a cap or hat of hunter orange, or an outer garment of hunter orange visible from all sides.
Sundays
North Carolina allows Sunday hunting on private land with some limits, and restricts it on many public game lands. The per-game-land rule is not carried in this app — check the game land before you go.
North Carolina requires hunter orange — a cap or hat, or an outer garment visible from all sides — for anyone hunting grouse, pheasant or quail with a firearm. Turkey is not on that list and woodcock is not either.
NCWRC does not publish a bag limit on its season-dates sheet and we could not confirm one elsewhere, so none is shown — check the Regulations Digest.
Two seasons, and the short one is the real one. The barrier islands of Carteret, Dare and Hyde carry a naturalised population hunted as a wild bird, male only. The statewide either-sex season is long and permissive because the mainland birds being shot under it are released ones.
Neither boundary is drawn in this app.

Hours, orange and licences
Shooting hours
not carried
NCWRC publishes shooting hours in the Regulations Digest rather than as a sentence on a page we read, and this app holds no copy. We do not retype it from memory — a wrong minute at either end of the day is a citation. Read the digest before opening day.
NCWRC
Licences
Hunting licence Everyone hunting, resident or not — A combination or sportsman licence covers it; NCWRC sells several ladders.
Hunter education certificate Every first-time licence buyer — North Carolina requires it of new hunters regardless of birth year, unlike Michigan, Wisconsin and Virginia, which all set a date.
Game Lands licence Anyone hunting a game land — A separate privilege from the hunting licence, and the game lands are most of the huntable public ground in the state.
Federal HIP certification Woodcock and every other migratory bird — Free registration with the federal harvest survey, renewed each season.
