Lake Huron Salmon and Steelhead Runs

9 tributaries on this map, 148.2 miles of run water, across Michigan. 9 rivers have something inside a window as of 1 October 2026.

Michigan's east coast. The chinook fishery here collapsed with the alewife and what is left is a steelhead and Atlantic salmon shore. Nine Michigan rivers on this map run fish out of Lake Huron, 147.3 miles of corridor between them, and the length is concentrated at the top: the Rifle River at 55.0 miles and the Carp River in Mackinac County at 42.4 account for most of it, while the Thunder Bay River is 1.0 mile below the Ninth Street Dam and the Cheboygan River 2.7 below the Cheboygan Dam. The Ocqueoc runs 13.5 miles to Ocqueoc Falls, the Au Sable 10.2 to Foote Dam, and the Swan, Tawas and Nunns Creek carry 11.4, 6.0 and 5.1 miles with no ceiling recorded.

Steelhead and chinook are on all nine, October through May and August through October. So are pink salmon, August into September, a species the record carries on every river of this shore. Atlantic salmon, lake-run brown trout and lake sturgeon each appear on a single river.

The run calendar across Lake Huron

One row per species, one cell per month, and the number in a cell is how many of these rivers have that species inside its window that month. Two densities rather than a gradient: the source is month-grained curated guidance and a smooth ramp would claim a precision it does not have.

Steelhead — 9 rivers
Chinook salmon — 9 rivers
Pink salmon — 9 rivers
Atlantic salmon — 1 river
Lake-run brown trout — 1 river
Lake sturgeon — 1 river

Drawn 1 October 2026. The ground is the subbasin mesh the app scores in, so the coastline is where the mesh stops rather than a separate shoreline; the mark at each river is its mouth, drawn for every river including the handful whose whole run corridor is under a mile and has no line to show.
