Water temperature — the colour of the river, and of every dot on it

50°F and colder is cold, through cold-transitional and cool, to warm above 70°F — the same four bands, breaking at 58, 64 and 70°F, that the app paints. Grey is water nobody has measured.

Live from the USGS — every pill above is live, so the numbers you are reading are the latest continuous readings at each gauge. Provisional and unreviewed, as all real-time data is. If that fetch cannot happen — you are offline, or the USGS is down — the pills fall back to the last value we cached, 30 September 2026, 13:43 UTC.

The character of the water

A sixth-order river carrying a median width of 79.2 feet over 231.2 mapped miles, the Muskegon drains 2,436.12 square miles across Clare, Mecosta, Missaukee, Muskegon, Newaygo and Osceola counties. Four gauges measure it, and each sits at the downstream end of its reach, so each July mean represents the warmest water in that stretch: 72.9°F at Big Rapids over a 132.8-mile reach, 74.3°F near Stanwood, 66.0°F near Oxbow, and 70.8°F near Croton, all from eight Julys of record between 2019 and 2026. Groundwater input is rated low at three of those gauges and moderate near Oxbow. Regulation splits the river into 36.3 miles of Type 4 and 55.4 miles of Type 3, both open January 1st–December 31st, with a creel of 5 fish and no more than 3 trout 15 inches or greater. Sixty-nine public land units total 327,200 acres. Twenty access sites include 14 launches and 6 walk-in points.

Thermal classification

Each gauge carries a July mean built from its own daily record — 8 Julys, 2019–2026, measured rather than modelled. A July mean is what decides which of the four bands a stretch of water belongs to, because July is when a trout river either holds or does not.

Reach July mean Band Groundwater

Stanwood

Oxbow
RM 82.1–71.2

Croton

Every gauge sits at the bottom of its segment, so each number is the warm end and the water above it runs colder. ±1.72 °F on the fit.

Fishable reaches

River miles are measured above the mouth, along the mapped mainstem. The reach breaks are the gauges, which is also how the temperature model divides the river.

Hatches on this water

53 insects are recorded from northern lower Michigan, which is the region this river sits in. That is a claim about the region and not a survey of this stream: nobody has recorded which of them has been caught here. Open the river in the app and the hatch panel will narrow it to the ones whose temperature window today's reading is inside.
