Grand River Watershed, Michigan

6,344 miles of mapped stream across 4,546 square miles of drainage in Barry, Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Ingham, Ionia, Jackson, Kent, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo, Ottawa counties, in 400 named streams. Michigan designates 971 of those miles as trout water, on 81 streams. The 3 mainstem gauges with a July record read between 76.6 and 77.8°F in July.

Water temperature — the colour of every stream in the basin

50°F and colder is cold, through cold-transitional and cool, to warm above 70°F — the same four bands the app paints. On this map the colour is MDNR's classification of the valley segment, not a measurement, except at the gauge dots, which read live. Grey is water MDNR has not typed.

Cold, cool and warm water

MDNR's Valley Segment Ecological Classification, which types the valley segment rather than measuring the water. It covers 38% of this basin's stream miles (2440.9 of 6,344); the rest is untyped and is drawn grey on the map above.

186.9 of the 2440.9 typed miles in this basin — 8% — are cold or cold-transitional water. The dominant class is warm.

There is no elevation model behind this page, so it carries no elevation range. MDNR's gradient class is the field that answers the same question, and over the typed miles it reads: medium 940.0 mi, low 878.4 mi, very low 357.5 mi, high 265.0 mi.

What makes this watershed distinctive

The largest drainage on this map: 4,546 square miles, 6,344.2 mapped stream miles and 400 named streams, assembled from four HUC8 subbasins with Kent County cut out of it. The Grand River itself runs 189.8 miles. The water is predominantly warm — of 2,440.9 typed miles, 1,599.5 are warm and 654.6 cool, against 139.6 cold-transitional and 47.3 cold — and that typing covers 38% of the network, the most thorough sample on this map. The five longest streams after the Grand, the Maple, Thornapple, Looking Glass, Flat and Red Cedar, all type warm. Even so, 81 streams are designated trout water over 971.4 miles, and Bear Creek and the Maple River hold Blue Ribbon designations. Public land is 152,392 acres, 5.2% of the basin, split across 1,123 units. Three gauges read between 76.6 and 77.8°F in July; all three sit on the mainstem.

Every named stream in the basin

All 400 of them, longest first. 20 have a page of their own and are linked; the rest are in the app. Thermal class is MDNR's, over the reaches it has typed. "Now" is the live USGS reading where a gauge stands in that stream.

Best time to fish

The hatch calendar for southern lower Michigan, which is the region this basin's centre falls in — the same regions the app's hatch panel uses. It is a regional record, not a survey of this watershed: nobody has counted insects basin by basin. Year-round records (midges, scuds, sculpins) are left out; they are true every month and they are not what a calendar is for.

December

47 insects are recorded from southern lower Michigan. Each links to its own page, with the flies that imitate it.
