69 mapped river miles, draining 211 square miles across Lake, Manistee counties, in the Manistee River watershed. 1 USGS gauge report water temperature on it, and this page reads it.
50°F and colder is cold, through cold-transitional and cool, to warm above 70°F — the same four bands, breaking at 58, 64 and 70°F, that the app paints. Grey is water nobody has measured.
Live from the USGS — every pill above is live, so the numbers you are reading are the latest continuous readings at each gauge. Provisional and unreviewed, as all real-time data is. If that fetch cannot happen — you are offline, or the USGS is down — the pills fall back to the last value we cached, 30 September 2026, 13:43 UTC.
Sixty-eight and seven tenths of mapped miles of river across Lake and Manistee counties, a median 30.9 feet wide, draining 211.3 square miles at Strahler order 4. A gauge at Nine Mile Bridge near Freesoil sits at river mile 11.7 and speaks for 56.9 miles above it, with a July mean of 66.1 degrees and a July range of 8.3 degrees, groundwater rated moderate. That is a single July of record, 2026, at an uncertainty of 1.64 degrees, and because the gauge sits at the downstream end of its reach, the water above it runs colder. Regulation splits: 22.9 miles Type 1 and 31.4 miles Type 4, open year-round but carrying three spawning closures around the DNR weir, including a year-round shutdown within 300 feet of it. Thirty-three Blue Ribbon miles run from County Road 633 to the Manistee County line. A 2022 survey in Lake County found 2,917 trout per acre at 123 pounds per acre. Six access sites and six launches are mapped.
Each gauge carries a July mean built from its own daily record — 1 Julys, 2026–2026, measured rather than modelled. A July mean is what decides which of the four bands a stretch of water belongs to, because July is when a trout river either holds or does not.

River miles are measured above the mouth, along the mapped mainstem. The reach breaks are the gauges, which is also how the temperature model divides the river.

53 insects are recorded from northern lower Michigan, which is the region this river sits in. That is a claim about the region and not a survey of this stream: nobody has recorded which of them has been caught here. Open the river in the app and the hatch panel will narrow it to the ones whose temperature window today's reading is inside.
